Abstract:
The communication printed above consists of an introduction to a Hungarian Transylvanian student's letter to William Sancroft (later Archbishop of Canterbury), a Fellow of Emmanuel College, Cambridge, and the Latin letter itself. It was written by Péter N. Szerencsi from London on October 6, 1641 and it contains thanks for Sancroft's hospitality in Cambridge as well as news from Transylvania, a Protestant principality at the time. Szerencsi also asks Sancroft for some theological works in English, thereby indicating at least a passive knowledge of English. The original of Szerencsi's letter is now inthe Tanner Collection of the Bodleian Library, Oxford. In his short introduction György Gömöri, a Cambridge-based scholar of Hungarian birth, provides further data about Szerencsi's travels.
